Together the APA, APS and ABP co-sponsor the New Century Scholars Program, a program aimed at increasing the diversity of the academic pediatric workforce. TheNCSP:
Selects under-represented minority (URM) pediatric residents with a career interest in academic pediatrics as New Century Scholars.
Matches Scholars with junior and senior mentors who provide advice on career
planning, fellowship selection, and other topics throughout the Scholar’s residency.
Interested in being a Mentor? If so, click here. URM mentors are especially encouraged. Requirements are:
Senior Mentors
Members of APS and/or APA.
Provide "big picture" advice on career planning, research, educational plans.
Welcome mentee into the academic pediatric community and culture.
Meet mentee at PAS 2019 Meeting - over coffee, lunch, or a scientific session.
Attend New Century Scholar dinner, Friday, April 26, 2019 & Friday, April 25, 2020.
Stay in regular contact with the Scholar during the year, at least one contact every two months (via email, phone, etc.).
Participate in program evaluation.
Junior Mentors
Fellows or Junior Faculty interested in mentoring.
Provide "nuts and bolts" advice on choosing and applying to a fellowship, career development, starting and academic career, selecting a research project, negotiating, work/life balance, etc.
